Southampton Solent
AIMS has been appointed to act as lead consultant for Southampton Solent University’s masterplan and estates strategy. This six month project will involve extensive consultation and analysis to seize and maximise the potential presented by development opportunities, primarily at SSU’s main East Park Terrace campus. As lead consultant, AIMS will also secure the involvement of other advisors and has already started that process. Working closely with the in-house team, AIMS will identify options and develop implementation plans, and then manage the process through to construction contract commission. AIMS now has access to seasoned HE-savvy professionals to extend its product offering beyond pure Estates Strategy and into the development phase – a through the line solution which clients are finding increasingly appealing.


New University for Peterborough
AIMS has been appointed to help drive the initiative for a new University for Peterborough. Initially this new phase of work will involve AIMS assisting in the visioning exercise and then move on to engagement of other partners, spanning universities, colleges, developers, sponsors and investors alike.

A dedicated team has been established by the City Council to build on the work to date (see much of which has involved AIMS.

This is another example of AIMS building long-term relationships with clients, having originally been retained by Opportunity Peterborough some time ago to produce the underlying business case and rationale for establishing higher education facilities in Peterborough and the surrounding area.

This is a complex project which plays to AIMS strengths, including
- expert understanding of the higher and further education sectors
- fused with experience in the fields of regeneration and business planning
- with the outcome and deliverables largely dependent upon both
o sophisticated facilitation skills and
o keen commercial acumen.


Framework Appointment
AIMS has been appointed to the University of Leicester Consultants Framework to help deliver the estates and related agenda of the institution over the coming years. AIMS has been appointed under 3 headings, namely Estates Strategy Support, Town Planning, and “Specialist Services”, a category which includes Space Analysis and Modelling and leading on best estates practice for specific parts of the University. This appointment follows hard on the heels of successful completion of reformulating the Estates Strategy for the University as reported below, and is a further example of AIMS track record in developing long-standing and deep relationships with its clients, across the full range of its service menu.


Leicester Science Park
AIMS has been appointed to support Prospect Leicestershire, the economic development & regeneration company for Leicester and Leicestershire, in the delivery of the Leicester Science Park Innovation Workspace project. AIMS will leverage its understanding of the university sector and its direct experience in Leicester to harness the input of both De Montfort University and the University of Leicester in this initiative, working alongside lead consultant/contractor Wilmott Dixon. Additionally, AIMS is giving guidance on the appointment of architects, the overall brief for development once the Universities’ involvement is crystallized, and on the overall business plan.


Plans Submitted for Frairgate, Coventry
AIMS have submitted an outline planning application for masterplan principles of Friargate, Coventry. This 3 million sq ft office led mixed use development will regenerate the area around the station as an important part of Coventry’s city centre regeneration. New offices and hotels will attract inward investment. Changes to Coventry’s ring road will set the scene for attractive streets and squares, including a wide at grade pedestrian route linking Greyfriars Green to a new Station Square.


Michael Booth joins AIMS
AIMS is pleased to announce the arrival of Michael Booth, who joins AIMS from DTZ where he specialised in Higher Education and Further Education property assignment work.
Michael has worked on college and university property strategies for nearly 20 years with a diverse range of clients including Oxford Brookes, Bristol, Hull, Strathclyde, Durham and Leeds Metropolitan. He has seen many of his key projects through to successful funding with the £64m Doncaster College building and the £15m funding of University Campus Suffolk (still the largest successful SDF bid in the sector) being highlights.
Like all AIMS consultants, Michael has several strings to his bow, with an active interest in space planning and management issues being reflected in recent assignments for the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and the University of Glasgow. He will operate from his North West base and so add to the coverage and reach of AIMS’ service lines.


University of Leicester
AIMS has been appointed to develop the University’s Estates Strategy as a follow up to two preceding standalone instructions which inform that overall plan. As is often the case, AIMS will be ensuring full engagement with key personnel at the University, under the direction of the Director of Estates, and so secure buy-in to both the process and the outcome.


Opportunity Peterborough
AIMS has worked alongside the city’s urban regeneration company to further develop a business case for the provision of Higher Education in this region, tackling the overall “cold spot” identified by HEFCE in its Common Evidence Base. AIMS has developed both the analysis and the stakeholder engagement and the outcome of the submission to HEFCE is now awaited.


New Management Team
AIMS commitment to developing excellence in the Higher Education and related sectors continues to power ahead, with the senior management team of Geoff Wright and David Ludford leading the way. AIMS menu of services – integrating Estates Strategy, Space Modelling and Town Planning, often within a regeneration context – has been cultivated though many close relationships in the sector and an equally close attention to the needs of clients to deliver service excellence. Separately, John Plumridge has responded to a need from one of those clients - the University of Lincoln - and leaves AIMS management team to join as the University’s new Director of Estates from 5 May. AIMS is pleased to announce that John will be continuing as a company director of AIMS, providing input to the continued growth strategy.


University of Bedfordshire
AIMS are pleased to announce that we secured planning permission for our clients, the University of Bedfordshire, for a new five storey academic/student centre building at the Luton, Park Square campus. AIMS proactive planning advice to the client, involving detailed discussions with Luton City Council and other statutory bodies enabled a successful and timely outcome in reaching this favorable planning decision.

The building will provide support, social and study facilities for students, including new exhibition spaces, dining facilities, a new Students Union and a 200+ seat lecture theatre. The development is scheduled to be commenced in March 2009.


Victoria Hall
AIMS are pleased to announce that our clients Victoria Hall have commenced works investing £35 million in Wolverhampton City Centre to provide 657 student bedrooms and 142 post- graduate apartments. AIMS acted as planning agents securing planning permission and negotiating a viable S106 Planning Obligation following complex discussions with Wolverhampton City Council and working with the City regeneration agency - Wolverhampton Development Company.

The 24 storey tower will act as a city landmark with a series of accompanying lower multi storey individual buildings. The first phase of the scheme is due for completion in September 2009). The scheme seeks to contribute to the regeneration of the Canalside Quarter and will symbolise the significance of student life to the development of Wolverhampton.


AIMS Achieves Consent for Henderson's Temple Row Scheme
Henderson Global Investors have won consent for a new ten storey office building with ground and lower ground retail within the Colmore Row and Environs Conservation Area. AIMS provided expert planning advice to the client, and ensured strong discussions with the City Council in reaching this favourable planning decision.


Mike Phipps
AIMS is pleased to welcome on board Mike Phipps as a retained specialist. Mike has an engineering background. Mike will be working with AIMS providing experitse in the area of DDA, SEN and access statements.

Mike has developed an economic assessment model that can be used by institutions to prioritise investment in access improvements, for use in dynamic, changing, estates investment programmes. The program provides a tried and tested compliant process to ensure that investment is not wasted in areas that are awaiting medium or long term major alterations or redevelopment.


Opening of Edinburgh Office
AIMS is very pleased to announce the opening of its office in Edinburgh, at No 8 Charlotte Sqaure. The company now has a national coverage with offices in London and the Midlands.

The office is headed up by John MacLeod, former Senior Partner of EC Harris in Scotland, an experienced educational property specialist. The projects run from the office include: existing analytical and appraisal work for Queen Margarets University, Edinburgh University , Napier University and Carnegie College.


Courtauld Institute of Art
AIMS is pleased to announce that it has been appointed by specialist Arts based, and world remowned, institute of the Courtauld to provide client side support in connection with an innovative residential development based in the heart of central London. The scheme should be complete in 2010.


Aston University
AIMS have been appointed to provide specialist advice in the area of space efficiency, utilisation, town planning and capacity analysis. This work will support a programme consolidation, refurbishment and re-construction of the vast majority of the academic estate at Aston.

This follows on from the granting of consent for the re-construction of the student village. AIMS will support the University in producing the business cases and phasing and delivery options.


Nottingham Trent University
AIMS is pleased to announce that the company has been appointed to provide strategic advice and a health check on the institutions current proposals for its Estates Strategy. The company is also assisting the institution to develop a series of bespoke space modelling tools to assist with a forthcoming, complex series of moves planned at the well known City Campus.


East Midlands Consultancy Framework

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
AIMS was appointed in January 2008 by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a part of London University, to prepare an Investment Option Appraisal and Risk Analysis paper for the College's Estates Department. Work will commence in mid January.


Lewisham and Greenwich Colleges
AIMS is working closely with Tenon, financial advisers, on the due diligence process for the proposed merger between Lewisham College and Greenwich College. AIMS is providing strategic advice on high level property risks during the merger period as part of its on-going working relationship with Tenon

University of Edinburgh
AIMS were recently engaged to produce a HEFCE/Green Book Compliance Option Analysis for the University's School of Geosciences.


North Nottinghamshire College
AIMS has been re-appointed as lead consultant and strategic property adviser for North Nottinghamshire College. AIMS is leading the development of the College’s Feasibility Study on its preferred property option. Working closely with KPMG and with members of our expert practitioner network, we have been able to deploy a wide-ranging team in order to develop the preferred option to the next level with a view to achieving approval in principle from the LSC in the Summer of 2008


University of Kent
AIMS has been appointed to develop the Estates Strategy for the University of Kent, covering both its main Canterbury Campus and its holdings at Medway.

A number of workstreams are involved, with town planning and space planning both pivotal. The strategy will examine the shape of the University in 2015, working alongside other consultants and the University's own team.

The output from our work is expected around Easter 2008.


Cambridge Education Group (CEG)
AIMS has been appointed to assist the highly reputed CEG in the next stage of its expansion plans. CEG is one of the leading providers of pre-university and English Language teaching in the UK and is looking to build on its existing base – a well established campus in Cambridge and a more recent one in Canterbury – by establishing a number of other centres. AIMS is advising on the overall business case and especially the size and specific location of the next centre. AIMS is working with CB Richard Ellis on the site search and negotiation details.


University of Exeter
Exeter wishes to become one of the top 10 UK universities within five years. AIMS was requested to produce a delivery strategy and evaluate the risks associated wih the University's plans as well as produce site specific option analysis work. Work is currently ongoing and is due for completion in phases by November 2007.


Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust
AIMS increasing experience in the health sector has been underlined by its recent appointment to assist the Trust in the development of a masterplan for the west flank of its central Northampton site. Working jointly with Sheppard Robinson architects, AIMS will be undertaking a development consultancy role in generating and appraising a number of options, taking account of market demand as well as planning constraints and opportunities, AIMS sees the health sector as an area of expansion, utilising experience gained in University teaching hospitals as well as direct consultancy activity in the health sector.


University of Bedfordshire
The University has been commissioned AIMS to produce an analytical survey of existing space versus future spatial requirements at their Bedford Campus


University of Kent
AIMS has completed a scoping document for the University, identifying and prioritising areas that need to be researched as part of a full Estates Strategy in respect of the University's Canterbury campus.


David Ludford
AIMS is pleased to announce the appointment of David Ludford as Head of Projects, London and South East. He has joined the company from CB Richard Ellis to help expand our services both in the South East and beyond. As part of our growth strategy, he will also be responsible for setting up our new London Office. David has significant experience in development consultancy, project management, planning and property strategies, both in the HE and FE sectors, as well as the public sector more generally.


Tyne Metropolitan College
AIMS is delighted to announce that it is working with Tyne Metropolitan College on a Feasibility Study as part of the inplementation of its Property Strategy. AIMS has completed the first stage of work and is engaging closely with the College and its stakeholders on a range of strategic matters. AIMS has deployed its core team quickly and is working with both EC Harris and Storeys SSP to bring the Feasibility Study to fruition this summer.


North Nottinghamshire College
AIMS is working closely with KPMG on the property strategy for North Nottinghamshire College. The College is already highly successful but faces the challenges of competing with the substantial levels of investment in education facilities locally and regionally. AIMS is providing strategic property and planning advice to support the development of the College Property Strategy and is working closely with the Education, Property and Finance teams at KPMG to refine the preferred option.


AIMS has been mandated by BRDC at Silverstone to put together ideas for the creation of a major new educational hub on the Silverstone estate and adjacent to the track. AIMS has interviewed a selection of HE and FE institutions and other stakeholders with regard to this project and has been working closely with CBRE, HOK and Cube.


University of Sunderland
AIMS has been appointed by the University to review the University's Halls of Residence Strategy and report on flexible solutions for the provision of student accommodation in a changing marketplace.


MANCAT and City College Manchester
AIMS have been appointed jointly with Tenon and Freeth Cartwright to conduct the Due Dilligence for the proposed merger of MANCAT and City College Manchester.


University of Cumbria
AIMS is working on a full assessment of options for student accommodation to be owned by the new University of Cumbria. AIMS has brought in the Russell Partnership to assist with the assessment of conference and out-of-term-time revenue.

AIMS has recruited Matthew Hartshorn to assist in the production of architectural drawings and designs. Matthew is a qualified CAD Technician and architectural draughtsman.


University of Salford
AIMS has been asked by the University of Salford to advise on the procurement of student accommodation and to provide a strategic Masterplan for future academic and student accommodation requirements.


University of Sunderland
AIMS has been commissioned by the Unversity of Sunderland to provide client-side advice to propose and implement a sustainable term strategy for the University's diverse stock of student accommodation. AIMS has assembled a team that includes local lawyers Burton Watson, J C Rathbones and Quayle Munro.


Dixie Grammar School
Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth has asked AIMS to look at their freehold and leasehold assets and draft an Estates Strategy for them.


AIMS has assisted the University in identifying future space requirements for the Faculty of Science. AIMS developed a model of the space needs of the Faculty, appraised the current space envelope, and assisted in negotiation to secure additional resources for the Faculty.


Royal College of Music
AIMS has been commissioned to provide the Royal College of Music with a User Needs Analysis of their current facilities based on interviews with senior academic staff and management.


University of the Arts
AIMS has been retained by the University of the Arts to look into elements of their student accommodation portfolio.


New member of staff
Emily Ushewokunze has joined our Planning Division as Assistant Planner. Having completed her BA (Hons) in Sociology and Social Policy, Emily also graduated with an MSc in Town Planning from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Emily is working closely with Geoff Wright, Head of Planning at AIMS, on a range of our public and commercial projects.


AIMS Documenta
AIMS launches ‘Aims Documenta’. AIMS has developed a service to assist FE and HE Institutions to outsource the recording of their property assets. AIMS Documenta is a ‘terrier’ service whereby each asset is listed together with full details of ownership, land registry information, GIS reference, lease details, mortgage details and rental and capital repayment schedules. AIMS European Consultancy
AIMS has inaugurated its European consultancy business by looking at two important advisory initiatives in the Higher Education sector in Italy and in Belgium. AIMS has exchanged memoranda with a view to signing a collaboration agreement with IMO consulting. IMO are undertaking a series of consultancies for Italian Universities and are interested in AIMS’ expertise in the following areas:-

Daventry Learning Partnership
AIMS has joined a consultancy team as a specialist adviser in a brief to advise the Daventry learning partnership on the feasibility of a new facility in the Learning Quarter of Daventry.


Leicester Grammar School
Leicester Grammar School has won consent for a new school site, following a call-in public enquiry. AIMS gave expert planning advice, thereby assisting the Secretary of State to reach this favourable planning decision.


University of Derby
AIMS has been appointed by the University of Derby to complete a high-level land-ownership, planning and long term strategic land strategy for its substantial City Centre and peripheral land holdings.


John Moores University
John Moores University, Liverpool has appointed AIMS to provide creative input to the briefing and development of phases of their £60m reconstruction programme. AIMS will focus on providing the strategic advice in connection with the creation of an innovative new generation of HE buildings. These structures will combine formal, informal learning uses with learning resources, research, social and student support spaces. The approach is based on creating a radical new customer-focused entity that will result in significant operational efficiency savings as well as in delivering unprecedented sophisticated service levels to the University's customers.


Opportunity Peterborough
AIMS has been mandated by Opportunity Peterborough to investigate the economic and social context to the creation of a new University of Peterborough and to assess the educational requirements of local employers.
